THREE PEAS IN AUTUMN

Writing this, not only has the weather totally changed from the start of the season, but B has changed entirely too. At the start of Autumn, he was taking his first tentative steps unaided. As we move into winter, he’s charging around like a little boy, is easy to understand and in charge of his own mind! Since we moved to our village i’ve loved seeing how the season changes by the day. Having a little person to watch change too it’s even more apparent how quickly times change. Blink and you miss them.

Autumn started, fresh in the knowledge we’d ‘done’ chicken pox. We had a new lease of life thank goodness. Energy and smiles to enjoy the end of the harvest and to explore a few more hay bales!

If felt like a major event whenever I made it into London for work, I think Autumn is a particularly bad time of year for nursery germs? As Sam says we live with a little human Petri dish now he’s at nursery… I made the most of being in London when I could, and I really enjoy the walk to and from work from the station, the view is lovely come rain or shine.

We had a delayed (due to rain) sports day at nursery. It was hilarious. I think the pressure and expectation was a little too much. It was a crawling race as they were all ‘just’ walking, he charged ahead into the lead and then the cheering got too much and he collapsed in a heap! There wasn’t really ever a winner as the others walked past helped by the key workers! It was hilarious, far more relaxing watching the older ones!

We had some fantastic days out – cycling, national trusting, walking. We are blessed to live where we do for all of these things.

I took a trip away for a couple of nights with work – my first since going back to work. It was surreal – getting on a plane in business mode, no baby in sight. We were in Athens to meet colleagues. It was perfect as a first trip because it was busy and because my boss made sure I didn’t have a chance to dwell on not being at home. Once we’d done with work we sight-saw and once we’d done that we dined well too.

While I was gone, Mr P and Master P actually had about £100k of camera equipment and a film crew onsite at home. They’re on a film that LinkedIn have done, talking about discussing fertility at work. We have all the stills from the filming and there’s some gorgeous ones!

Sam and I had our first night away from home – alone – which was absolute bliss. A luxury pigsty, in a remote setting near to Winchester, and a curry on the decking as the sun set. Perfect. My parents had Little B, they had a less relaxing night – how do babies know that something funny is going on and decide to wake up hourly when they normally sleep 11 hours straight…

And if one night away from home isn’t enough, the next day we all 3 headed west to Cornwall for our first getaway in a long while. The weather did not smile on us, but I’m Cornish enough to get on with it anyway. We had a lovely time by the sea and our stay at the Bedruthan Hotel was as good as a family holiday in the UK can get. Even with a teething feverish baby!

We also had a lovely country wedding in Exmoor whilst we were away. They aren’t particularly relaxing with a toddler in tow… But it was a joy to see an old friend get married and see friends we don’t see enough of. We also discovered that travelling at night is definitely the best way to transport a toddler with minimum disruption.

When we got back from Cornwall, the little ones walking was basically unstoppable. I guess spending a few days away from his walker was a watershed moment for him. Toddlerhood had begun!

In October we had a fantastic time at the zoo – as the weather cools and the children go back to school the zoo becomes quiet and cool and the animals come out to play. Tigers, rhinos, leopards, giraffes… I loose track but we saw a lot and it was so quiet that I almost worried that I was the only one there and the animals were on the loose! B loved it, especially the locked horn rhinos and the towering necks of the giraffe!

We headed north to Cheshire and enjoyed the start of the leaf peeping season. As well as discovering our first pumpkins!

Autumn I remember mostly, despite the photos, for being very very wet. I am very grateful my maternity leave weather was a great deal better. Because of the rain there’s definitely been more time spent inside…

But obviously, with little B, despite the weather we’ve still been outside. Thankfully we are well kitted out ourselves, and he’s got all the gear – the best puddle suits and ski gear and wellies – that he doesn’t get cold or wet! Nothing stops our trips to the swings, roundabouts, slides and seasaws!

There’s one hard day and night where we live each year, and that is the night that the calves are taken away from their mothers, to you know where… When it happened in our first year I didn’t like it, but it’s something that will always happen, so we have to do our best to not think about how the cows must feel to have their offspring taken away. But it has made me realise that we’re going to have to explain all this stuff to B in the next couple of years, and I know he’ll be upset when he first realises it.

I had a weekend away from the boys. They indulged in tractors for a weekend, a tractor shop (to get our lawn mower serviced) and a ploughing match!

I indulged in wine, sleep and the great company of some best friends. It did us all good and Anglesey even in the rain was a blast!

And as we end Autumn, we really do have a little boy in the house. He understands what we say, he tells us what he needs, he’s eating increasingly grown up stuff (with a spoon, although he tends to reserve that skill for nursery or when we aren’t watching) and he’s a super cool, walking (running), talking little boy.

And our little boy has met Santa for the 2nd time too! Christmas started early this year, it wasn’t even December! Slightly harder work than last year, it was all a bit much on first approach but we tried again and he took it all in warily!

Onwards to Christmas… Winter has begun which means spring is thankfully on the way!
