This last week winter finally arrived in the UK – which effectively meant that the rain stopped for a few days and fell as snow and we all turned up our heating and focussed on the fact that the evenings are lengthening and kidding ourselves spring can’t be that far off even though we are only midway through January…
In such a situation I find myself daydreaming of being anywhere but here and it turns out that many of my fellow bloggers are doing exactly the same thing as me…
I wish I was in… Goa
Kathryn from Boutique Travel Blog is the queen of gorgeous travel photos and recommendations of off-the-beaten-track boutique adventures and places to stay
“I wish I was in… Goa. Brightly painted houses peep out between the coconut palms that line the roads leading to beautiful sandy beaches that stretch for miles. When tired of the beach I’d hike through the jungle to swim in the pool beneath the Dudhasgar waterfall. In the evenings I’d sip a refreshing Kingfisher beer with my feet in the cool sand and a gentle sea breeze in my hair, then tuck into a spicy Goan fish curry.”

I wish I was in… Italy
Polly from Follow your Sunshine is lucky enough to have sunshine in her day to day life in Doha but revels in gorgeous trips back to Europe
“I wish I was in… Italy right now. Specifically either lounging beside a gorgeous infinity pool on the Amalfi Coast, or sipping on a cocktail in beautiful Florence. Someone take me back to my honeymoon last year please!”

I wish I was in… the sunny gorgeous town of Marbella
Priyam from Fernweh Forever has been travelling since she was a child and has a serious case of wanderlust (Fernweh in German, nice thinking) going on…
“I wish I was in… the sunny gorgeous town of Marbella in the Costa del Sol region of Spain. Picture perfect beaches and jaw dropping coastlines make it a perfect destination to relax during the day and party hard at night. Just imagine opening your window in the morning and seeing crystal clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. Beaches of every kind – white sand, pebbles, normal sand, yes yes every kind to soak your feet in and become a beach ninja. Oh and did I forget to add the most amazing clubs and restaurants that line up the coast to make sure your sun bathing is accompanied with the most delicious cocktails and delicious tapas. Aaaah winter blues kicking in seeing these pictures.”

I wish I was in… Greece
Heather from Heather on her Travels is always finding somewhere new, making sure to get into the culture, find the best food and enjoy the scenery
“I wish I was in… Greece. In the dreary days of January and February my mind wanders to the heat of Greece which I manage to visit most years since my sister lives on the Greek island of Zakynthos. We love visiting her in the summer since the sunshine is guaranteed and everyone is in a holiday mood, there just seems to be a buzz in the air. We stay in her hotel, open the French windows each morning to blue sky, get up late, go to the beach, have a swim, drink a frappe, then long late lunches in the shade. Last year I got a double dose of Greece on a Greek island cruise with Azamara Club Cruises when we visited Santorini, Mykonos and Patmos. The scenery was different but the sky just as blue, the mood just as happy and the sea just as cooling. Roll on summer for my next trip to Greece!”
I wish I was in… Italy
Nikoleta from The Bonfire Dream has everywhere on her list to visit if she’s not been there yet…
“I wish I was in… Italy. Burning sun, cold margaritas, fun skeletons, good books, hot guys and wild parties. What else can one wish for??”

I wish I was in….Cathedral Cove
Kelly from Around the World in 80 Pairs of shoes is just back from a gorgeous Christmas in New Zealand so is missing heat and holiday more than most…
“I wish I was in….Cathedral Cove in New Zealand. I visited at Christmas time with my family for the first time and we had a fantastic day together; after hiking into the Cove (it takes approx 30 mins) we ended up cheating and taking the water taxi back to Hahei Beach. Unfortunately it’s not a hidden gem and is super popular but I would love to return in the middle of winter to enjoy an empty beach and glorious blue waters with my family again”

I wish I was in… Costa Rica
Jackie from Catalonia and Valencia is your go to guide for all things warm, sunny, Spanish and downright blissful.
“I wish I was in… Costa Rica. The fascinating country of Costa Rica is the stuff that office cubicle dreams are made of…. Costa Rica has been wafting around my consciousness for quite a while now. As a child of nature, animal lover and adventurous type, I feel the calling of Costa Rica rather strongly. I dream of exploring its magical landscapes on horseback, where it seems like waterfalls and jungle-fringed scenes lurk at the end of many a trail. Mystical misty crater lakes, turtles nesting, white-water rapids, stunning National parks, in a country that is teeming with fascinating wildlife – is there anything missing? Yes, I almost forgot to mention the over 300 beautiful beaches to choose from, along with the fact that this Nation are considered to be the happiest in the world. These are just a small selection of the reasons why Costa Rica is playing gently on my mind. Before I manage to get there, I will savour its sweet music and the endless, wonderful possibilities that I sense on its horizon.”

I wish I was in… Mauritius

I wish I was in… Abu Dhabi
Emma from Adventures of a London Kiwi is a straight-talking travel aficionado and has had some marvellous adventures in the UK or worldwide
“I wish I was… back in the beautiful streets of Abu Dhabi. With palm tree lined boulevards, turquoise bays and balmy winter-sun dappled days this Middle East oasis surprised us. We padded through the stunning white marble Grand Mosque, sipped coffee overlooking marsh islands, rode camels through sand dunes and slept in glass sheathed skyscrapers. We raised a glass to family moving onto new adventures, explored a 7-star hotel, nibbled cake with expat friends near their private beach and luxuriated in 25°C temperatures before we caught a cab back to Dubai.”
I wish I was in… Cape Town
Angie is SilverSpoon London and has luxury food, drink, hotels and life down to a tee, globally. So many incredible recommendations!
“I wish I was in… Cape Town. When I visited South Africa last year I totally fell in love with Cape Town. The weather is absolutely beautiful and I don’t think I’ve ever seen such stunning scenery; beautiful coastlines, pristine beaches, manicured gardens and ragged mountains. I also loved the food there, incredible fresh fish, perfectly prepared desserts and, of course the amazing South African wine.”

And finally… I wish I was in… Tenerife
Personally, the bucket list notwithstanding, I wish I was in… Tenerife. And what is particularly lucky about this wish is that I am fairly certain that come mid-Febraury the wish will indeed come true. As is normal for January we book ourselves something to look forward to preferably with a little heat. This year neither Mr P nor I could take a long break so the Canary Islands is an ideal destination as we should get sunshine and 20-23 degrees celsius during our visit. We are staying at the Gran Melia Palacio de Isora in their adults only ‘Red Level’ which looks suitably boutiquey and luxury for a bit of R&R. We are already booked in to clamber to the top of Mount Teide volcano and I’m sniffing around on Pinterest for other ideas too.

Thanks for joining Jackie – it is great to see everyones wishes and whims at such a chilly time of year!
Of those listed, I think I would have to agree with Cape Town (or Tenerife if I was just looking or some lazy sunshine time!). That said, winter in the UK isn’t so bad – we’re getting some unseasonably mild weather for the time of year right now, despite being in the north!

You must be fed up of rain up in Cumbria by now Paul, and more coming – South Africa would be just perfect right now…!
