Flashback Friday travel photo memories 11 – Snowdon

New year 2007-08 and we were looking for activities to keep a group of us out of the pub and doing something fun together!

Some of our friends live on Anglesey and so we came to the happy conclusion that climbing Mount Snowdon was the thing to do!

Looks of preparation and making sure we had the right kit ready – some of our group have been going up time and again since they were little, so knew which route would suit us best.

The day dawned – wet! Of course!! So we kitted up in all our sailing waterproofs and carried on regardless! Visibility was low but it wasn’t windy!

We chose the pyg track. A nice walk up past a lake with no climbing. In the flurry of leaving the house and being sure we had champagne for the summit, we managed to leave the map on the kitchen table… At the point when we were climbing a scree towards what we now know was crib goch (an arête that requires crawling along…) the map would have been helpful, but fortunately local knowledge kicked in, and the cloud lifted momentarily and we were back on the right track again!

We popped the corks on the summit and enjoyed some bubbles with some soup before getting back off the mountain as quickly as we could – clothes sodden at this point despite waterproofs!!

Snowdonia – New Year 2007-8

We toasted our summit success with drinks in the Pen-Y-Gwryd pub.  It is where Hillary and Tenzing were based when they were training for their successful Mount Everest attempt and has some amazing pieces of history on its walls!  We often stop here now en route to visit our friends as it is such a quirky place for a view!

We did of course then see in New Year in a number of the Menai Bridge pubs, come to think of it – I believe the pub  had a power cut and so we did the midnight countdown earlier than midnight and nobody even realised…!!
