A great dame – the Chewton Glen

As my husband will confirm, I often ask him the question ‘when can we stay at the Chewton Glen next’ followed swiftly by the statement ‘i’d really like to stay in a treehouse there’…  In fact he might go so far as to say I sound like a broken record!  But the fact is that I really like it there and have been lucky to stay there previously.  It really is charming, whilst I am shocked to say that I prefer the dining room at Limewood, staying at the Chewton Glen is so relaxing and the whole experience so quintessentially British that the great dame does of course leave you wanting for more time there!

We stayed in February and were in what I believe was a junior suite – the Frank Mildmay suite in the main house.  I am not sure how much it would typically cost but we were able to use agent rates that were very palatable.

It was a lovely room and the all the furniture was good quality and incredibly comfortable.  The room has a nice view down across the gardens to the rear of the property and a small sun-trap of a balcony if we had been there on a summers day instead!  The bathroom was big and everything to be expected of 5* – including a TV above the bath and REN goodies which I really like (and now they are easy to get hold of in Marks and Spencer)!  We also had a little hall-way where we could keep all our clutter and travel bits, here there is also a tablet which is what you use to arrange any room service – very clever, it was the first time I had seen something like this and I like the idea.

We stayed in the days before I was off dairy so the first thing to do with the tablet was to order a cream tea to go with management’s welcome gift of a bottle of English fizz!  (Don’t miss the hotels chocolates – I’ve long enjoyed Mr P spending time with the hotel through work in the past as he would bring these home for me, they really are a cut above!!)  Splendid I might say – it set us up well for laps in the pool and fun in the hydrotherapy pool!!!

Life is about balance

For drinks and dining, the Chewton Glen is very proper – and it is really nice to be somewhere like this as there doesn’t seem to be enough of it about (as much as I like the relaxed style of Limewood these days)!  The bar area is very inviting, very much like someones lounge – and full of fire places!  Good nibbles come with the drinks as standard of course!  Dining is in Vetiver restaurant – the decor is lovely with clouds on the walls.  Dinner is very enjoyable, quite an occasion.  We’ve often popped there for lunch (which is I might add great value with a set menu and champagne on arrival) but this was the first time I’ve had supper at the CG when it hasn’t been a grand ballroom event.  We opted for the tasting menu, with wine matched for each course.  By no means a cheap option – but an easy option as we didn’t have to pick from the options, instead getting a bit of each!

And of course breakfast is well taken care off – fantastic menu choices as well as a continental buffet which left us very full and actually feeling rather healthy too!  It was a quiet time, breakfast certainly wasn’t rushed or busy and with lovely views of the gardens.

What a start to the day!

What a start to the day!

The grounds at the CG are lovely – definitely take advantage of these if you have a sunny day!  The gardens are immaculately kept, even in winter – the hotel has its own kitchen garden as well.  There are some lovely swings from the big trees which in the summer have cushions in.  There is also an outdoor pool.  The hotel has also thought ahead – in the hallway there is a collection of every size of Hunter wellie (no one minded me padding from our room to reception in just my socks – by this point we were starting to feel at home!!) and then a walking route marked out down ‘Chewton Bunny’ to the beach.  Only a short walk, but well worth it to work up an appetite for another good meal!

When we finally had to check out, there was still one final surprise in place!  By the time we’d paid up our car had arrived, which is always a nice touch!  But what we really liked was the care package left in the car for us – very thoughtful and it certainly had us driving away thinking very highly of the service from start through to finish!

Everything thought of!

So that has taken me full circle… Mr P – when can we stay there next!!

I’ve heard you say many a good thing about the Chewton Glen, Anna, that it really does make me want to visit one day… and staying in a treehouse there, that does sound extra special! 🙂

Sounds and looks wonderful. I also love the idea of staying in a tree house, so this seems like a perfect option. The drinks and nibbles looks very inviting also. I am not surprised that you want to go back!

I have to admit that before I read this post I had never heard of Chewton Glen but honestly, this place looks like heaven! Whenever I got to the end of the post and read about the ‘care package’ that was in the car, I was immediately sold on this.

The grounds of this location are awesome and I can definitely see how this would be a highly sought after location for a weekend break.

There are a number of similarly priced places in Hampshire that always seem to be fully booked – incredible!!

It looks like you were wonderfully spoiled!! I would love to experience that. It doesn’t look like a place for children, or is it? I travel with and stay at enough places that the children get to experience travel, but sometimes, I do need some adult time! I call it “adulting”… I need to adult for the weekend 🙂

😉 Mr P tries, he does have links to this hotel and Cliveden though! I have seen children there, but I think you would enjoy it more without – you time for sure!
